Doctoral Scholarships Programme at KU Leuven Belgium

For its initiatives to cooperate in the development, KU Leuven selects exceptional students from countries in need as scholars to pursue their PhD at the biggest university in Belgium. Global Minds Programme Global Minds Programme is managed by IRO, the school’s Interfaculty Council for Development Cooperation.

The idea is to offer students the chance to conduct PhD research using a “sandwich method, which implies that 50 per cent of research takes the place of KU Leuven and 50% at the institution home to the scholar, which is supported by a local co-promoter. This PhD degree is conferred through KU Leuven.

Scholarship value/inclusions

Eligibility:

A candidate must become an alumnus from one of the nations included in the country list.

Candidates with citizenship from the EU cannot be considered. The same applies to applicants with a permanent EU residency permit.

The latest Master’s degree of the candidate must be awarded not more than 10 years prior to the first day of Oct. 2022 (including the calendar year that is currently in effect).

The applicant must have been given an academic grade equivalent to High Distinction or better. Degrees awarded with a final score equal to second-class second/lower division are not considered.

The research proposal must be of high academic value with a particular focus on the potential for developing the research proposal.

Instructions for application:

The application process consists of two stages: (1) initially, the candidate must get admission into an academic program for doctoral or predoctoral studies, typically 2.5 months prior to the scholarship deadline. Applications submitted after January 15th, 2022, could not be processed within the timeframe. (2) Once acceptance has been granted, will the applicant be eligible for a Global Minds PhD award. The deadline for applications for the scholarship is April 29th, 2022, at 5:00 PM GMT.
