MPOWER has created its Global Citizen Scholarship to be as wide as possible to accommodate the broad and varied experiences of international and DACA students.

There is no need to be a borrower with MPOWER to be a borrower.

MPOWER Scholarship

In recognition of the incredible capacity of students from other countries, MPOWER will strive to produce multi-lingual, globally-minded and culturally competent graduates ready to tackle the most pressing issues facing humanity in technology, science, business, public policy!

Awards of scholarships are given annually to students from abroad, and DACA students attending schools MPOWER helps.

MPOWER Scholarship Awards:

  • Grand Prize: $10,000
  • Runner-Up: $2,000
  • Honorable Mention: $2,000

MPOWER Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

  • Accepted into or enrolled in an academic program that is full-time at a U.S. or Canadian school that MPOWER sponsors and
  • International students are permitted to legally attend school within Canada or the U.S. or Canada, depending on the circumstances:
  • To study in the U.S. means that the applicant has met one of these requirements:
    • Have a valid visa that allows for to study at a university in the U.S.
    • Does the Deferred Action protect you from Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
    • Are you are a U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder)
  • For studies in Canada, this means that the applicant has met one of the following criteria:
    • Is it a Canadian permanent resident
    • Have been issued a valid Canadian study permit

This scholarship was designed specifically for international students and DACA students.

So, U.S. citizens wishing to pursue their studies in the U.S. and Canadian citizens who want to attend university in Canada are not ineligible to receive this scholarship.

MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship Details

Who is Eligible to Apply?

  • You must be accepted into or enrolled in a full-time program of study at a U.S. or Canadian school that MPOWER funds and
  • International students can legally attend school within both the U.S. and Canada, depending on the circumstances.
    • Studying at a university in the U.S. means that the applicant is a U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holders) and is covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program or holds an active visa that allows studying within the U.S.
    • To study in Canada means that applicants are either Canadian permanent residents or hold an official Canadian student permit.
    • This scholarship was created specifically for international students and DACA students. This means that U.S. citizens wishing to pursue their studies at a university in America are not eligible for this scholarship. U.S. and Canadian citizens seeking to study within Canada are not qualified to receive this award.
  • You do not have to have been an MPOWER borrower or applicant to be eligible for an MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship if your eligibility requirements are as stated above.

How are the Winners Selected?

The winners will be chosen based solely on the essays they submit. MPOWER will choose winners based on:

  • The overall quality of the essay should show clarity of thought with a compelling mission and vision, as well as superior communication abilities in English;
  • The degree that which there is an evident connection between the candidate’s chosen area of study and ambitions and goals; and
  • Potential of the candidate as an entrepreneur, scientist or leader who can make a positive difference.

When and How is the Scholarship Funds Received?

After MPOWER’s selection process, MPOWER will verify their eligibility. Following this confirmation, winners will receive an acknowledgement.

When MPOWER receives the winner’s signed Release, MPOWER will disburse the money directly to the winning university or college under the provisions that are in place under any U.S. or Canadian laws.

If the winner is not verified or fails to sign the Release, the person is ineligible for the scholarship. MPOWER will choose a substitute winner.

Other Notable Details

Your visa must be added to your passport by the competition’s deadline.

MPOWER will award one major prize of $5,000, as well as two $1,000 scholarships in this year’s scholarship cycle.

We will notify recipients within 8 weeks from the date of submission.
